It seems to me that %26quot;Honest%26quot; Abe is given way to much credit as being a good president.
Here%26#039;s a guy who suspended the constitution and Habeus Corpus, instituted the first draft, took huge uneeded powers, initiated a terrible war (not to mention slavery had nothing to do with it), and could care less about blacks in the longrun.
Most southerners, including Robert E. Lee, were against slavery. Even Henry David Thoreau ... a great abolitionist... took the side of the south. There were black confederates and the Cherokee Nation joined the South as well.
The south fought all along, not for slavery, but for states rights and the constitution. Lincoln was a tyrant they were rebelling against.
So who was really right, Lincoln or the south?
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
Well the truth is it%26#039;s not that simple. The South say it as an issue about state%26#039;s rights. While it is true Lincoln did not fight the Civil War because of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation only was in effect in states that were in rebellion against the Union. If say Texas or Virgina had stayed in the Union slavery would not have been abolished in those states. Lincoln once said if by freeing all the slaves or by keeping all the slaves in slavery the Union would be preserved he would do it. His main concern was that part of the nation was trying to break away and start another nation. Lincoln wanted the Union to remain intact. He did suspend Habeus Corpus and the Supreme Court ruled he could not do that. I think Lincoln was a complex person like everyone is and that we tend to try and make him out to be some Nobel night in shinning armor, which is just not true. There is a lot more to it, like with everything and every person in history. Things are not that simple, the events and their unfolding are not that simple. It would be nice if high school teachers and a few professors would learn to teach history and not the myths that are being taught now on almost every historical event.

Did you forget to wear your hat yesterday while clearing the weeds off your doublewide?
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
History records him as he was, one of the greatest presidents of all time.
Tough times call for tough measures.
He did not initate a terrible war. The Southern states who left the union did that. He instituted the first draft but a lot of countries have that.
Lincoln was against slavery. He never owned a slave and spoke up about the rights of all men.
The south fought for states rights yes but it was the right of the state to say a man could own another man. That is what they wanted. That is the only thing the South wanted, the right to own another human being. If Lincoln had said, ok thats fine, then they would not have cared about states rights.
Lincoln made it clear if elected he would end slavery. He was elected and kept his promise.
Lincoln was right.
Do you feel the South should have won and slavery still exist?
I mean the discrimination that still exists for blacks today is bad enough. Dude! This was a terrible question.
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
Most southerners were against slavery?
--only if you count the slaves%26#039; opinions, which most white southerners did not. It is true that most white southerners were too poor to own slaves, but they still favored slavery, passionately.
And the war had nothing to do with slavery?
--The election of the first Republican president is the straw that broke the camel%26#039;s back. The party formed out of the abolitionist movement.
You are correct about some African %26amp; Cherokee Americans siding with the Confederacy. But I disagree with every other claim in your question.
The short answer: Lincoln was right.
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
You know it really depends on which way you look at it... Were the crusades ruthless invasion or men fighting for their beliefs, were liberators, who went against those at the head of their countries, traitors? You can spin history any way you want when you have all the facts, it%26#039;s up to you...
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
Lincoln.. what kind of question is that... not only did he make a move that saved our country, but he kept from going insane. the poor man suffered from major depression, had a wife who almosted needed to be comitted to an asylum and lost many children and his mother. He took risks to do what was best for our country. Yes they may have been a bit extreme but what is better.. being calm and let slavery and wrong morals take over the US and change history probably for the worst, or be somewhat of a tyrant and ban the owning of other humans as an unwilling work force? If you believe that you should own humans, work them to death and whip them if they don%26#039;t, sell and treat them as animals/inferiors, and think segregation is ok, then fine the south is right... but if u believe all men are created equal, they all have the right to life, liberty and the persuit of happiness, and that everyone should be free, then yes Abraham Lincoln did the right thing. The South had the right to rebel, i do agree, and yeah they did. Just because Abe tried to stop them doesn%26#039;t mean that he was wrong.... if you believe he was wrong, you%26#039;re basically saying that everyone was wrong for stoping Adolf Hitler.
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
First of all, Lincoln hated to be called %26quot;Honest%26quot; Abe.
2. He had a right to suspend Habeas Corpus because in the constitution it states that the President can take any measure in a time of need and war.
3. Would you really like to have slavery in our society today? If not for the Civil War, we probably would have...1. two countries in the %26quot;United%26quot; States, 2. slavery would still exist, 3. high levels of discrimination not only against blacks but also immigrants.
4. Robert E. Lee was not against slavery. He even said slavery was an evil. He only fought for the South because all of his past generations have lived in Virginia and one governed it. Lee had strong ties to his home state, and when Virginia seceded, he was pained to leave the nation he once fought for, and fight for his loyalties.
6. The south did fight for slavery. They wanted to protect their %26quot;perfect%26quot; way of life.
7. Please stop defaming one of our great presidents if you don%26#039;t have correct information. Are you saying that Lincoln was a bad president? What would you do if 7 states seceded right when you were elected? And would you be against slavery or for slavery?
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
I think you%26#039;re wrong, but it%26#039;s a fair question to ask, and definitely worthy of debate and research.
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
well i agree the south was fighting for a cause, but the constitution makes what the south did illegal so off the bat the did something illegal, so lincoln figured if they%26#039;re gonna break the laws in the constitution i may as well too. Lincoln beat them at their own game, so i applaud him
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
Yes it was wrong for slavery to exist, but because it existed %26quot;African-Americans now have a good place to live%26quot;.
I feel that Lincoln was wrong for doing many things. I can%26#039;t understand why they gave him the credit, although I%26#039;m sure he helped the country in other ways.
It didn%26#039;t make him completely right.
Do you think Lincoln was wrongly judged by History?
Wow, average libertarian.
How about Ronald Reagan? He had the HIGHEST defecit in the history of our nation at the time. Sure, the rich were happy, but you faux-repubicans tend to forget that fact.
