What do I do about this bill collector?

On November 8th 2007 I moved out of the apartments that I was living in. I filled out the written 30 day notice to vacate on October 2nd and also gave a check that included October%26#039;s rent and rent through November 8th. On the 8th I moved out and returned my keys.

Now, about a month ago, I got a call from a collector saying I owe $800 to that complex because I abandoned my apartment and they found it empty one December 12th!

So I called the complex to find out that a few days after I moved, they switched owners and lost all my paperwork, there was no evidence of me signing a 30 day notice, or a receipt of payment. They told me to call my bank and get a copy of the check I had given them for the last months rent.

So I called my bank, paid for a copy of the check, and went in person to give it to them. They said they would take care of it.

Today the same collector called. He said that the matter is unresolved and they put the $800 on my credit report, and are filing papers to sue me!

If you still have a copy of the canceled checks, send a letter, 1 regular, 1 certified, with copies of the check stating that unless this matter is resolved within 10 days of this letter, you will file your own actions against them. If the certified letter comes back unsigned, do not open it because that%26#039;s your only proof the letter was sent. Make sure you make a copy of your letter.

You need to get in touch with a lawyer and explain the problem as well as possible to him or her. Make sure you explain to the lawyer about the stress that your under. But make sure you keep calling the ne owners until you are heard. Also write down all the time you called and whom you spoke with everytime you call. But don%26#039;t let furstration be the reason that you stop trying to get the answer you wanna hear. If all else fail call your local news and get them involved as well. Good luck.

I would call back and talk to that collector supervisor and tell him everything that you have told us and make copies of the Bank statement black out all accounting numbers and information on the bank statement and mail them the copies by certified mail so then you know the collectors company has the information and I would also go the extra step and get the apartment complex to write a letter on your behalf stating that they lost the paper work and hang on to and when it goes on to your report then you will have all the information to give to the credit agency and they will have the information removed.
