How to become an ultrasound technician. I already have my Associates of Arts degree.?

I live in Tampa, FL if that helps any. I already have a general Associates of Arts degree. I%26#039;m currently pursuing my Bachelors in a non-health care related field but I have decided I would like to pursue this before I finish that degree. How would I go about doing this? How many additional credit hours does it require? If you have done this yourself, please share. Thanks!

When thinking about entering an ultrasound program, you need not be concerned so much about certificate vs. degree. What is important is that you go to an ACCREDITED program, whether it is college or hospital based. An accredited program allows you to take your registry (licensing) exams upon graduation. Once you get licensed, you will never be asked about your schooling again. An employer does not care what route you take to get licensed, they just want you to have that license.

Don%26#039;t waste your time or money on a NON-accredited program. Upon completion and graduation from a NON-accredited program, you must work in the field of sonography for a full year prior to taking your licensing examinations. But, you will have a hard time finding an employer to hire you, unless you are licensed.

I would suggest you observe an imaging department to get an idea of what ultrasonographers do daily. There is much more to it than scanning pregnant women. Most people have no idea how much is involved in this career!

You can find a list of accredited schools in your area, by searching %26quot;diagnostic medical sonography%26quot; and your state at the following site. There are links provided for each program, which will give you additional information (including course duration):

There is one program in Tampa, and nine others in the state of Florida.

Many people, myself included, go to school to become a radiologic technologist, before continuing to ultrasound school. In fact, it can be difficult to get into u/s school without the RT license. There are many more choices for schools for x-ray in most states. You can find them here, by searching 閳ユ笧adiography閳?and your state:

The pay for ultrasound technologists will vary, depending on experience and geographical location. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists just did a large salary survey. You can see how much a RT and/or ultrasound technologist averaged, per year, in your state here:

am currently preparing for a radiologic tech program myself. ultrasound is in the same %26#039;family%26#039;. you will need to apply to an ultrasound tech program. teaching hospitals offer this program, as well as universities and community colleges, so check around in your area. i believe generally it%26#039;s a 2-year specialized program with some basic medical prereq%26#039;s, such as anatomy %26amp; physiology, terminology, and possibly some basic general courses, depending on where you go. hospitals around me, for rad tech, require a %26amp; p or biology, med terminology, algebra, things like that, before you apply to their program. i%26#039;m in MI.

It is usually a 2 year program at a community college, and you generally need to take prequistes before you are admitted. Because you had an arts degree, you proabably will not have taken most of these courses. There are some short programs that are not accreditied, so be careful. Sonography programs are compettive and are usually full time things, and I think most radiology programs run through the summer. I don%26#039;t need why you are trying to get a non-health/science bachelors if you want to do this. The prgram is very specific, and I don%26#039;t see the point in tkaing it if you don%26#039;t plan to work in ultrasound. If you do, get a degree in something at least a little related like or else it won%26#039;t help you.
