What should I do if my professor is punishing me for complaining to his supervisor?

I am taking calculus 2 and my prof is a young, eastern european, grad student that doenst care at all about the class. The class is a joke! So I went to complain to his supervisor (turned out to be his mentor and friend) to allow me to switch out of the class. His supervisor told me to stay in the class because he will reprimand my instructor and force him to hand out a syllabus and grading policy and everything will be fine. Now I just got my first midterm back and he took off points for right answers, for tiny computational mistakes he gave me no credit even though it wasnt multiple choice, etc. I went to speak to him and thigs got even worse. He didnt give me any points, instead mockingly told me I deserved it. I studied alot for the test and I attend other prof class to learn the material. I dont know what to do? I cried all night! My mom told me to wait untill the end and then appeal my grade and gather enough evidence to argue my case.

I%26#039;d go over the supervisor%26#039;s head and tell him/her the story. I%26#039;d seriously consider dropping the class and taking it with someone, if you have to take it, that has a clue as to how to teach it. Remind this person that you or your parents or both are PAYING for this class and you shouldn%26#039;t have to put up with such nonsense. Although your mother has a point, I think you should go now rather than put yourself through hell for however long is left in the semester. You shouldn%26#039;t have to go through that! Further, you%26#039;ll go through hell, your grades, in general, might suffer, and you%26#039;ll have to pay for it all again to take it again?! No! Go to the supervisor%26#039;s supervisor.

Do exactly what that first person told you to do. (As a teacher, this really makes me angry that they are doing this!)

I think, since you are so upset about what%26#039;s going on (and I know what that can do to you), that you should talk to someone right away. You shouldn%26#039;t have to go through all of that and pay for the privilege! Good luck! Report It

Quite frankly, you write a letter to the department head outline EXACTLY what has happened. Keep a copy for yourself %26amp; send the other one REGISTERED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED. Then, you get out your student handbook - there%26#039;s usually one posted on the web - and follow the appropriate procedures that are outlined in it.

Please note, you CANNOT be punished in retaliation for a complaint you made - at least not at a public university in the USA. That%26#039;s extremely frowned upon.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Do not speak to ANYONE about this without either putting it in WRITING, or having at least one witness. If you are forced to speak privately, follow up that same day with a letter memorializing the discussion. E-mail it to that individual and ask them to confirm the discussion and to clarify any points you may be mistaken about.
